The Three Gorges Dam was built to provide in China's growing energy demands. The damn provides 22.500 megawatts in electricity. Construction was started in 1994 and finished in 20016. Between 1 and 2 million people were forced to move to enable construction of the lake behind the damn. The dam is the world's biggest dam, 2.3 kilometers or 1.5 miles wide, and 180 meters or 550 feet high. Enough steel to build 63 Eifel Towers was used to build it. Chairman Mao had already planned to build the damn, which was delayed because wars and economic misfortune. Ninety villages and thirteen cities disappeared below water.
