Inside the Actors Studio: Barbara Streisand (2004)

*** (out of 4)

Another good episode in the long running series has Barbara Streisand sitting down for an interview and host James Lipton starts off by talking about how hard it was to get her on the show. In the opening minutes Lipton starts reading off Streisand's resume and no matter if you can't stand her or not, there's no denying that she's done quite a few amazing things in her career. We start off talking about her troubled childhood including the death of her father when she was just 15-months and this death has a few interesting conversations throughout the interview. We learn about how she got started in the business, her first few jobs, how the Actors Studio turned her down and then her big success on Broadway and eventually the movies. As you'd expect, there's quite a bit to discuss here but the first portion centers on her music career and I think the interview lags at this point. It certainly picks up once we hit the movie stuff and this includes the actress talking about working with Robert Redford in THE WAY WE WERE plus her attempt at remaking A STAR IS BORN and trying to bring the musical back with YENTL. Fans of Streisand are certainly going to enjoy hearing her discuss all these topics. She never goes into great detail on anything and I think there's way too many times where she acts "shocked" whenever Lipton tells her how well something sold or how many awards she won.
