The book that Carl reads is "How to Stay Alive in the Woods" by Bradford Angier, which also appears in The Blair Witch Project (1999).

The film that Carl and his neighbor watches is a documentary called "Alone in the Wilderness". The documentary tells the story of Dick Proenneke who, in the late 1960s, built his own cabin in the wilderness and filmed his day to day activities.
