Iain Dootson reprises his role as Archeron from the Children in Need spin off radio play 'One Fine Timelord' which had aired 6 weeks before. In this story he is much younger and not yet made a Lord.

Although this story marks the end of the series 5 plot lines, it was produced as part of the season 6 recording block.

This story is the first to be cast after an open audition process. Some 300 applicants put themselves forward for roles in this special and the 6th season. Over 600 story lines were submitted in a similar open writing submission held a few months before.

The Father of Time resolved the series 5 subplot set on Gallifrey with Omega and the Third Doctor which had played across several stories. These segments, written by series script editor M. Justin Parsons, were edited together and released as a single 20 minute installment on the 4th December 2013 as "The Father of Time Prequel - The Gallifrey Story".
