120 Seconds to Get Elected (2006) Online

This is an incredibly cynical film that unfortunately won't be appreciated by the majority of the people in this world. While I know I will come off an elitist (and I am, to a degree), politicians count on the stupidity of the electorate and that is why we end up electing evil and incompetent people who say absolutely nothing!! This film illustrates this very well, as a man running for office says anything to appeal to the audience--even though much of it is double-talk, meaningless and convoluted logic designed to appeal to morons. I love how at one point the man promises to make everyone rich. Later, he says that we MUST have some poor people because otherwise no one will be considered rich! That's crazy but so much of what he says in this insightful film explains why we pick who we pick. Don't believe me? See this film and think about the folks we've chosen as our leaders--as a democracy only works if the people are responsible and not governed by selfish self-interest as well as have a working brain. Clever and a bit scary.

"120 Seconds to Get Elected" is a Canadian 2-minute short film (as the title already says) and it was made by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve back in 2006. The lead actor is Alexis Martin and he plays a politician who wants to get elected and tries to walk the fine line between making the people happy without offending them. Oh well, most of what he tells is obviously lies and the over-the-top rhetoric and statements help things overall I guess. But there is really nothing too interesting to it. It somehow works as a parody of what basically all important politicians do and shows that they say what people want to hear, but sadly (just like the one in here) they won't act accordingly. It was like that 10 years ago when this film was made, probably also 100 years ago, and it is exactly like that today. From a cinematic perspective, there isn't anything really memorable to these 120 black-and-white seconds. I am sure it would not be a known work if it wasn't for the famous filmmaker behind it. Thumbs-down from me. Not recommended.
