After leaving Nafplio--the first capital of the newly founded Greek Nation--the affluent French Duchess of Plaisance and ardent philhellene, Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun, and her young daughter, Eliza, moved to Athens, circa 1834. There, a chance encounter with a handsome descendant of the prominent Mavromichalis clan would lead to a fervent but ill-fated romance, as the Duchess' frail offspring would die of bubonic plague in 1837. Alone and devastated, the pained Sophie would try to live a normal life against the backdrop of Eliza's untimely death; however, on December 19, 1847, a frantic fire would eventually rob her of the remaining cherished memories of her.
