Prison escapee Nolan Wilbur murders a gas station attendant and steals a woman's car in a bid for freedom. When the woman notifies the Highway Patrol, a series of roadblocks is immediately put in place and Dan Mathews orders the Patrol's helicopter to aid in the search. Wilbur abandons the car and spots a prospector who is attempting to re-open an inactive mine. He holds the man at gunpoint until he spots the helicopter, then recklessly (and loudly) forces him into the mine, causing a cave-in that seriously injures the prospector. Dan and Sergeant Williams and forced to enter the mine unarmed to aid the victim, but once outside they are able to position themselves for a final effort to bring down Wilbur and airlift the injured prospector to a hospital.
