The show is based on "Consolevania", an hour-long video games show from the same team which started being distributed on CD-ROM by postal mail in 2004. Online distribution followed, and the series drew enough media attention and critical praise that it was picked up for broadcast, albeit in a more structured fashion and with some of the more dubious recurring jokes excised. Legend, the online gaming champion featured in series 1, is one of the few characters to make the transition. Consolevania purportedly had a larger viewership than some of BBC Scotland's own shows at the time.

Special guests included Tim and Eric of 'Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job' fame and Colin Baker in character as The Doctor from Doctor Who.

The format changed as the series progressed. The first season consisted of six ten-minute weekly episodes. By popular demand, the second series expanded to six half-hour weekly episodes. The third series was mostly streamed online through the BBC website, providing eighteen twelve-minute weekly episodes, while three half-hour specials were broadcast on TV.

video Gaiden was probably the number one thing on television in 2006...IF you happen to like video games, Scottish people and general insanity. VideoGaiden is the creation of Rab Florence and Ryan McCloud, the creators of cult online games programme Consolevania. it delivered reviews which were somehow still quite informative despite being absolutely hilarious, welded together with completely insane sketches about the gaming world and Rab's "Gaiden Guide to...", which was basically a weekly rant against, well, anything vaguely connected to video gaming which annoyed Rab on that particular day.

as Rab himself would say..."if you don't like me...if you're the BBC...then you probably won't like video Gaiden..."
