Gabrielle is taken hostage by Morpheus, the God of Dreams. Morpheus wants Gabrielle for his bride. Xena, as you'd expect, is having none of it. She enters a dreamscape, filled with all manner of threats she'll have to overcome if she is to survive and bring Gabrielle out with her.

Of the first three episodes in the Xena series, Dreamworker is filled with more magic than we've seen so far. It's not the best episode, but it is a nice preview of what's to come in the series. Xena's battles in the dreamscape are nicely staged. We are treated to some of the best action we've seen so far. The dreamscape itself is an interesting idea where, we quickly learn, anything is possible. Dreamworker also introduces us to the idea of Gabrielle killing in battle and what it would do to her. It's a theme that's explored in much of the series. It really adds to the muchly needed character development. Another plus for Dreamworker is that, when compared with the previous episodes, Gabrielle is less annoying. Fortunately, her character goes on to become much more than the damsel in distress she plays early in the series.

I guess my biggest complaint with Dreamworker is the way Morpheus is presented - or not presented would be more accurate. His absence from the screen hurts the episode. There's a lack of a big-time threat. While there are plenty of fight scenes, etc., without Morpheus, the episode is missing the danger or real sense of peril that should be present.

Uh oh, Morpheus wants Gabrielle for his bride and has taken her away. Xena enters a dreamscape in order to rescue her and faces her dark self. Meanwhile Gabrielle has to figure out how to defend herself and defeat bad guys without killing.

Before her kidnapping, Gabrielle expresses an interest in learning to fight(with a sword), and Xena gives her some advice on how she doesn't necessarily need to fight in order to survive. Loved the breast dagger conversation, "It's not like your breast aren't dangerous enough." Interesting to know that Gabby has paid such close attention to Xena's breasts. Wink wink. Later, our little bard does indeed demonstrate her cleverness when facing the bad guys thanks to Xena's advice.

Xena comes face-to-face with her past evil-self and struggles to defeat her in an intense psychological battle. Xena's evil-self that she faces comes from her own interpretation of her past-self. That's what make this scenario so interesting. This is an excellent episode with some insight and character development for both Xena and Gabrielle. It's topped off nicely with some philosophy from Xena at the end.

Gabrielle wants Xena to teach her how to dl combat.Xena tells her that when in danger she should run.

However someone else expresses an interest in Gabrielle, especially her blood innocence. The followers of the god Morpheus, take Gabrielle who will lure her into performing tests that will force her to kill someone and then she will be sacrificed.

Xena attempts to rescue her but she needs to enter a dreamscape where she must confront her violent past. Only then she might be able to get to Gabrielle in time.

The episode marks a growing friendship between Xena and Gabrielle. It also leads to a more mystical and magical aspects of Xena with the influence of gods and their worshippers.
