Martha (Reta Shaw) receives a phone call from her sister Evelyn in Florida. The Navy is transferring Martha's brother-in-law Harry to Alaska. Evelyn asks her to come to Florida to help look after their mother who can't travel with them to Alaska. Martha faces the reality of leaving Gull Cottage and the Muir family permanently. Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange), Jonathan (Harlen Carraher), and Candace (Kellie Flanagan) are all saddened but decide to give her a surprise party. The kids and Mrs. Muir try to play off the news of her leaving to her as to not give away the surprise party. She obviously mistakes this as the them not caring about her. Mrs. Muir gets Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) and Mr. Peevey (Guy Raymond) to appear uninterested in seeing Martha before she leaves, as they too will be at the party. Unaware, Martha is sobbingly depressed. As she packs to leave without saying goodbye, Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) feels he must intervene and appears to her for the first time. She faints and awakes with disbelief. Mrs. Muir explains the Captain to Martha. She receives good news just before Mr. Tuttle begin to tell her something important. Engaging, touching, but not especially comical.
