After a friendly call to Norton's Orchard, Dan arrives at work visibly weakened and obviously ill. Dr. Holmes and Officer Williams ask about his recent meals, since the cause is initially believed to be food poisoning. There is concern that disclosure of a case of food poisoning could lead to a panic. However, the doctor and his lab assistant subsequently determine the cause to be exposure to toxicity from organic phosphate. Since that substance is found in insecticides, Dan and the doctor decide to revisit Norton's Orchard to determine whether anyone there has contracted the mysterious condition. They find that young Tommy Norton has fallen gravely ill from the condition and link the cause to the boy's use of an organic phosphate paste, which he mistakenly believed to be whitewash.
