initially only meant to be a six-part mini series, but became a huge success that spanned five seasons from 1985 to 1991

One of the first Portuguese TV Series to be filmed on film stock.

Filmed with a low budget of around $2,500 per episode.

Rogério Ceitil was the main member of the staff behind the project, often doing a variety of jobs besides directing and writing, so that the episodes could be broadcast on schedule.

Each 50-minutes episode was filmed in five days.

Most characters never change clothes for the most part of the series. It is rumored that the clothes were provided by the actors themselves.

Rui Mendes explained there was no trick with the car walking by himself, there was a stuntman hidden in the driver seat, and he calculated the track and obstacles without seeing the way.

Lucifer's real name is Luciano Ferreira.

The real name of Chinês is mentioned at least once: Chiong. Almost every henchman have the same name of the actor that plays him, only the leaders differ i.e. Lucifer and Àtila.

There was really a small explosion under Lucifer's chair, and the cast said that after that, it was impossible to work with Luis Vicent because they couldn't stop laughing.

Rui Mendes once said that the series was conditioned by the fact that Fernanda Coimbra at around 18h30 had to be driven to an old people's home, and in some scenes she was nervous about the possibility of arriving late, and therefore the possibility of the people in the home not letting her enter.

Rogério Ceitil liked Zé Gato (1979)'s last episode so much (in which Rui Mendes participated), that he decided to join Mendes and António Assunção again. The last episode of Zé Gato, wich was full of gags, was the kick start of Duarte & Companhia.

Everyone who's a good portuguese knows this series, in it's time it meant a great deal of fresh air and great series in portuguese television.

Lucifer was a great "bad guy" and Duarte and his famous red Citroen 2CV were absolutely great...

What can I say more about this one? It's the top notch humurous/detective/action/whatever portuguese series of all time.

I certainly hope Portuguese Public TV put on this one sometime during the summer time...if not this year, the year after...it's definitively a must see!

This show was really cool. The good guys and their funny red car ( I personally think that it's the series trademark. every time I saw one of those I would comment it has being Duarte's car .. ), the mad guys, the jokes, the stories, everything.

A really good detective show.

And the cast is composed by some the greatest portuguese actors ever..

Pitty that now they don't make shows in Portugal like these. We have to 'import' all the good stuff.

If you talk/understand portuguese, you got to get a way to see this show. It's really good..

And if you like this one, you probably like Claxon ( 1990 ) also.

I have almost 22 years, in another words, i've born in 1984. Duarte & Companhia was made in 1985, but my very first memory about myself watching TV, is not watching sesame street or the muppet's show, but watching great series like the knight rider, or the a-team, and... Duarte & Companhia!!!

This series passed on TV for years... it's an awesome series, and i would love it if some producer decided to make a remake of this series, or even a movie!... Just watch it!! P.S. - This series is also known here in Portugal as the Portuguese Knightrider! (but with a very very low budget!!)

Duarte & C.ª follows the misadventures of a small detective agency in Lisbon. Intrepid Duarte is the detective, Tó his sidekick and Joaninha the secretary with a mean punch. Actually, the villains are no match for the women in the series - including Duarte's wife and mother-in-law - and invariably get the crap beaten out of them.

Main villains include Lúcio Ferreira (Lúcifer), who desperately wants to belong to a Mafia franchise in Portugal; demented Átila with the maniacal laugh, my personal favorite back in '85; also not to forget their inept and colorful henchmen - big ugly Rocha, politically incorrect Chinês (always whining that he is in fact Japanese), and many others.

The series in politically incorrect, as one would expect from the 80's (remember British 'Allo 'Allo?) but that is also part of it's charm, as is the overall "Ed Wood-ian" feel - bad acting, low budget, no FX, but clearly all had great fun filming it and we had great fun watching it.

But don't take my word for it. Rent it, buy it, watch it and see for yourselves. Is there a subtitled DVD to take Duarte & C.ª to a non-Portuguese audience? If not, RTP should consider the idea. Portuguese and English subtitles should be enough, other main languages would be added value.

Ahahah I totally agree with "jonybigude". I'm a 21 year old girl (born in 1985 just like the series) and my memories are just the same!! I remember A-teem and knight rider as well... and also MacGyver! Those were the best series on Portuguese TV when I was a child!!! Duarte & Companhia was extremely funny! It was clearly made with a very low budget... but the characters are more than funny, the women are always very powerful, the gangsters think there are as good as the Italian Mafia, there is a crazy professor...and, of course, Duarte and Tó who always get in the way of the gangsters Átila and Lucifer.

Very good!

Without a doubt, one of the best Portuguese productions ever !!! Very funny, with lots of very good action scenes and hilarious comedy scenes, with the best Portuguese actors and with many scenarios; But the real merit is undoubtedly the fact that they do the best they can with a truly low budget. Very funny, highly recommend.

Well, the first thing that i remember from this tv series are the characters... funny stereotypes !!! The good guys ( two of them and the lovely secretary) and the bad guys ( ANÍBAL and is crazy cook). The good guys are detectives always triyng to solve strange cases. They have the help of a automated european Citrôen 2Cv car. Anibal ( the bad guy) is always trying to destroy Duarte e Cª. No need to say that all is attempts are frustrated. Funny plots... great fun
