Mo Yan, Nobel Prize in literature laureate 2012, originally wrote this for director Zhang Yimou. But Zhang didn't like it. It also had scenes of the "cultural revolution" (1966-76) which were potential censorship minefields. The screenplay was later picked up by a Taiwan newcomer Li Youqiao and turned into a little-known debut feature.
