The Spear of Destiny is given properties similar to the One Ring, including a hidden inscription that can only be revealed by fire, and the ability to whisper in order to entice its owners to make use of it.

The title is an homage and reference to J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring.

In reality, Tolkien's experiences in the First World War influenced many of elements that appeared in in his novel, particularly the depiction of Mordor resembling a World War I era battlefield, and the relationship between officers and their enlisted men mirrored in Frodo and Sam.

Maisie Richardson-Sellers uses her natural English accent when her character impersonates a British nurse.

Tolkien is depicted as suffering from Trench Fever at the beginning of this episode. While the Legends cure him of the affliction, in reality, the illness resulted in him being sent home and relieved of combat duty. In his absence, his battalion was virtually wiped out,and all but one of his closest friends were killed by the end of the war.

While in the trench, Tolkiens captain calls him "a fool of a Tolkien," which is a variation of the quote from "lord of the rings the fellowship of the ring" where Gandalf calls pippin "a fool of a took".

This episode took place during the Battle of the Somme. Future dictator Adolph Hitler was present at the battle, and was famously obsessed with occult objects; such as the Spear of Destiny.

During this episode Nate is seen wearing an INF shoulder pin on his British uniform. This is the shoulder title which was used by the Canadian Infantry Battalion (a part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force CEF) which would have fought at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15-22 September, 1916. "Legends of Tomorrow" and its sister CW shows are all filmed in Vancouver, Canada.

Sara refers to Mick, Rip, Nate and Ray as "The Backstreet Boys"

Rip Hunter paraphrases Aragorn's famous speech from "Return of the King" while Tolkien is listening intently. However, that particular speech was not written by Tolkien. It was by Fran Walsh, Phillipa Boyens and Peter Jackson specifically for the film.

The Legends' efforts to broker a cease fire in the midst of the Battle of the Somme mirrors the "Christmas Truce" that occurred during the first Christmas of World War I. Allied and German troops called an unofficial ceasefire without approval from their commands, during which they rescued their wounded, buried their dead, and even played football against each other.

The plot of the episode loosely parallels that of "The Lord of the Rings", including the Legends being tempted to seize a powerful artifact for their own use, holding a conference where they argue about whether or not to destroy it, undertaking a quest into a hellish wasteland, and one of their number succumbing to temptation and betraying them.

Dr. Martin Stein says "One can not simply walk into the middle of a warzone" is a clear nod to what Sean Bean's charactor says in The Fellowship of the Ring "One does not simply walk into Mordor".

+ Tolkien got tolkiened by LoT. Hah!

+ Rip's broadcast: where Aragon's big screen speech felt jarring/out of place, Rip's felt right....yes, I teared up.

+ I like they parked Sara while Rip is on the field, the same when it was the other way around. Didn't take long for him to find his new place on the team. Sweet!

+ They really are pulling out all the stops now that the finale is 2 eps away, because we got FIRESTORM!!! Making jelly beans!!!

MVP: The way the ep played out Amaya/Mick's conflicts was brutal and completely organic (take notes, Flash) which made it all the more gut-wrenching to watch. This ep showcased Mick's own brand of stoicism in the face of heart-breaking loss and what Snart means to him: family/friendship. Watching Amaya carry the burden of her future knowledge really hit home the price she will pay to save reality. So I'm really hoping the writers write an out for Amaya because she doesn't deserve this.

* Brain fart: when Sara handed the spear to Mick, I thought she's affirming that she doesn't think of him as "lesser"! But nope that was just a "here, hold this". Show knows how to twist the knife.

Mick and Amaya were the highlight of the ep, with the lighter Tolkien homages a perfect touch of sweetness to the bitterness, all ramping up the charge towards the finale. Score: 9.3

This is my favorite episode of them all. Whoever thought of this has my salute. The similarities between the spear of destiny and the ring of power was the beauty of it all,the legends want to destroy it, the legion want to use it for their own selfish interests. And to top it all off, this time, the bad guys won contrary to LOTR. I really need to see how they come back from this now since the only thing that could destroy the spear is lost.

At this point, I think the problem with Legends is that I've lost an overall interest in this year's story. It had a promising start, and took the show in new and refreshing directions, but since midseason it has failed to recapture my interest. Reducing the plot to the Spear of Destiny, which is nothing more than an enhanced MacGuffin.

This week the team finally compiled the spear together, stealing the last part from Eobard, who happened to be hiding with the Legion of Doom in the "Vanishing Point". So, in the same vein that the George Lucas episode was clearly an homage to Star Wars, this episode was a blatant homage to the first Lord of the Rings film. In this regard, I enjoyed the similarities between those two. Particularly, seeing Mick turn to the dark side and help the Legion. He could be pulling one over on the team again, but it sure doesn't seem like it. And I'm fine with that. As long as he'll still have his ridiculously stupid one- liners.

I like that this show is doing more with the settings, especially considering last season was stuck in a 20th century setting every episode, but I don't feel like the characters are evolving to anywhere particularly interesting. Did we really need an episode where they searched for a guy buried with Jesus' blood? Wait, was that actually the plot of this episode?

I guess my biggest frustration comes from the lack of development overall. Take Sara for example, she is the captain of the Waverider and leader of the Legends. But is she really in a more interesting spot than she was on Arrow for a season and a half? I just feel like the show hasn't taken the characters to a state where they evolve into different and possibly more interesting humans. Instead, they choose to make the same old mistakes and misfires regarding time travel and changing their destinies. For now, this show is stuck in mediocrity. It's undeniably dumb fun, but I find myself questioning why I'm watching a show that doesn't add anything new to sci-fi or comic- book television. It's all about execution, and the show isn't necessarily executing right now.

+Fun take on Tolkien

-But there's nothing more under the surface

-Same old mistakes

One again the Legion of Morons can't keep the spear safe. If brains were chocolate this bunch collectively wouldn't have enough to fill an M&M.

This was a great episode as far as Lord of the Rings goes. There are so many references, some harder to notice than others. The overall plot is sort of a repeat of previous episodes, but it is fun to watch as a hardcore LOTR nerd. Some of my friends have watched it and enjoyed it even though they don't watch Legends of Tomorrow. There are enough LOTR references to keep you watching to find them all.
