Eliot Ness knows that John "The Cropper" Cropsie killed Belle Alpine's husband and that she witnessed it but for reasons of her own, she won't identify him. Cropsie is a small-time hood who wants to get into the big-time and gets a job loan-sharking for Julie Flack. One of his marks tells him that a local company has manufactured 50,000 gallons of industrial alcohol. He manages to steal the precious liquid and tries to sell it to Flack. Ness is onto him quickly and Cropsie has made a serious error in including Belle Alpine's brother-in-law Murray in his plans.

One of the last Untouchable episodes is arguably one of the best ones that was ever done in my opinion. Much to his regret Harold J. Stone proves to be right about his contract killer Don Gordon, that he ought to stick to his job and not get into the business aspect of crime. This was after Gordon killed one of his business rivals. The victim's widow Jeanne Cooper saw Gordon do it, but has her own reasons for keeping mum on the subject with Eliot Ness.

Gordon hears some inside information that he feels will allow him to make a killing in the waning days of Prohibition and it involves a heist. He brings in as partners two contract killers from the guy who Gordon bumped off, Johnny Seven and Dan Frazer. Of course these two also have no brains for the business either.

I suppose the moral for this episode is what Dirty Harry said about a man's got to know his limitations.

When the episode begins, a man was just murdered and his wife can identify John Cropsie (Don Gordon) as the killer. However, she clams up and claims she has no idea who killed him...and it certainly was NOT Cropsie!! Ness is shocked and it's not at all clear why she would do this...until much later in the show.

In the meantime, Cropsie is tired of being a small-time hood and plans on moving to the big time by robbing 50,000 gallons of industrial alcohol. He plans on selling it to his boss (Harold J. Stone) but when this doesn't go smoothly, he becomes sneaky. He also has a little problem come up with one of him employees being too eager...and the guy jeopardizes the entire operation by killing someone unnecessarily. As to why the lady didn't identify Cropsie...now that becomes VERY important and leads to a great conclusion.

Overall, this is an entertaining and well done episode. It takes a bit more thinking as this one is not just shooting and the like...which I appreciate.
