Sham Battle at the Pan-American Exposition (1901) Online

On the closing day of the Pan-American Exposition, Saturday, November 2d, 1901, a sham battle took place at the Stadium on the Pan-American Exposition grounds, between the six tribes of American Indians and the United States Infantry stationed at Buffalo. The battle was most exciting and realistic, there being about 250 American Indians clad in their picturesque dress and fully decorated in their war paint. About half the Indians were mounted upon spirited horses. The attack was begun by the Infantry rushing the Indians who made a firm stand and succeeded in repulsing the soldiers. The scene is replete with charges and many hand to hand encounters. Most of the action took place close to our camera and the picture which we secured is excellent. The scene opens with a parade of the American Indians, which in itself is of great interest, the parade portion of the film consuming about 25 feet.

Sham Battle at the Pan-American Exposition (1901)

This Edison film was originally shown in two parts. At the start of part one we see some Indians riding in on horses and then we cut to a long view shot of a battle going on. The second film, running just under four minutes, contains the majority of the action as we see soldiers doing battle with the Indians.

Both parts combined last about five minutes and it's pretty much one long action scene and you have to think it's one of the earliest and best ever filmed. I thought the second part was extremely entertaining and I especially liked that the camera was placed a lot closer to the action. This here helped get better shots of everything that was going on and there are a few times where soldiers are hiding just under the camera and you can see the top of their hats! There are a couple of great shots of horses speeding by the camera as well.
