It's 1959 and the Cold War rages on. Tensions between the United States and the USSR are at an all-time high. The threat of nuclear war hangs in the balance. But in the midst of this intense psychological warfare, the unlikeliest of heroes step forward, not in a war zone, not at the negotiating table, but on a basketball court. This is the extraordinary tale of the Harlem Globetrotters and their historic trip into the heart of the Soviet Union.

30 for 30 Shorts: From Harlem with Love (2014)

This episode in the ESPN series takes place in 1959 as America and Russia are in the middle of the cold war. A promoter has been trying to get The Harlem Globetrotters into Russia for a tour but the requests are often denied until one day when they're given permission to do nine shows. These ESPN shorts usually take a look at lesser important or lesser known moments in sports history and a lot of them talk about stories that I wasn't familiar with. I had never heard of this story so it was pretty interesting to see why the Globetrotters were taken to Russia and how they really did help ease a little tension between the two locations even though, needless to say, they didn't actually stop the Cold War. We get interviews with a couple of the men who went there to play and hearing their stories are pretty much priceless as it gives us a clear view of what happened while the American team was there.
