Episode 39 is a better one as there's plot development here. The best episodes thus far seem to be those centred around the enigmatic, crusading figure of Burke Devlin. More of the conspiracy surrounding his prison term is hinted at in the conversation between Roger and Sam, the painter. Meanwhile, Burke is offered the chance to leave town. Mitchell Ryan's acting is impeccable.

At the Evans cottage, Roger (Louis Edmonds) visits to demand Sam (David Ford) not paint Burke's portrait, then Burke (Mitchell Ryan) arrives for his first sitting. Roger now appears without the forehead bandage incurred from his car crash, but with a wound "drawn" in. He hides in the bedroom. Sam tries to put Burke off, claiming the shakes. Burke says Sam, "jumped as if I stuck a pin in you," but insists on beginning the sketch anyway...

Sam lets Roger know about his sealed "insurance" letter, containing details of the 1956 incident...

At Collinwood, Liz (Joan Bennett) signs some business papers for Malloy (Frank Schofield) when Ned Calder calls. Liz asks Ned, who was her business manager for 15 years, to come back to work in Collinsport. She wants him to help fight off Burke. Ned will consider the offer. We are led to believe Ned Calder left after some incident. Malloy trusts Ned, but decides to go after Burke himself. Malloy finds Burke and has a proposition for his rival...
