The movie inspired by real events tells the story of the KV-1 tank's crew heroic deed. Having a losing fight, the crew of Semyon Konovalov destroyed 16 enemy tanks, 2 armored vehicles and 8 vehicles with enemy personnel near Nizhnemityakin farm in Tarasovskoye district of Rostov region. A female tank repair wizard, a soap opera love story, and tanks that are 'indestructible', as the original Russian title suggests. Indeed, I don't think a single Russian tank gets smashed in this film, while German ones are too many to count. Watching this, one would be under the impression that in 1942, Germans were about to raise the white flag. Because I think in this film alone, the entire tank arsenal of Germany was wiped out. But that should not come as a surprise, because, as we learn by the end, Germans are all mentally retarded, at least judging by their actions. I am having a hard time trying to imagine what pleasure the average Russian might draw from this. The film is a prime example of the schizophrenic nature of Russian war film: Russians are both total underdogs, and, at the same time, as tough as the Terminator. The victim, barely able to survive, and , at the same time, Superman who annihilates anyone, anywhere. Watching a Russian war film is like listening to a fairy tale. They all follow the same script, the same beats, the same twists. These films are not the exploration of something new, but invariably an exercise in telling the same fairy tale in a slightly different setting or with a slight twist. If you've seen a Russian war film, you've seen them all.
