In the third season finale, Mike and Carl get stuck working at the Renaissance Faire after their boss, Captain Murphy, gets dumped by Mike's mother. Later, as a tornado descends on Chicago, Mike and Molly each confess important news to each other.

The series was initially going to have a storyline introduced in the Season 3 finale where Molly told Mike that she was pregnant and she would have given birth in Season 4. But the producers decided to pursue a different type of change for Molly by having her abruptly quit her job in the Season 4 premiere and eventually embark on a successful career as a writer. While one Season 4 episode made a brief, un-followed up reference to Molly having a miscarriage, in Season 5 Molly tells Mike she resumed using birth control without telling him after two years of trying without success to get pregnant; this would cover the period before the planned reveal in "Windy City" and confirms that Molly has never been pregnant at all on the show.
