Backstage, Johnny witnesses a play's star accuse her understudy of poisoning her before collapsing dead. The actress, Laura McKay, serves three years in prison before being released. Johnny is there to welcome her back to New York with an acting offer from the same man who produced her ill-fated earlier show. At the reading, the producer's partner makes a scene about not wanting that murderer Laura in his play. Laura flees the theater in tears. During the time she's away, the angry producer is found murdered in his apartment.
