Salute Your Shorts Michael Comes to Camp (1991–1993) Online

Camp Anawanna's newest arrival, Michael, quickly perceives that the real one in charge isn't the heard-but-never-seen camp director Dr. Kahn, or his ineffectual councilor Kevin "Ug" Lee, but a bullying fellow camper named Bobby. Among the girls drawn towards Michael, Michael shares the greatest affinity with baseball pitcher Telly, and the two hit it off. Envious of Michael's good looks and athletic ease, Bobby aims to get this newcomer in trouble by forcing him to raid the girls' cabin. In the course of it, Michael breaks Telly's glasses. Bobby readies to "help" Michael out by viciously casting the blame on another, innocent camper (Henry Laster as Kent Flankman), but as he and henchman Donkeylips prepare to inflict the dreaded "Awful Waffle," Michael shows integrity by confessing to the deed and taking full blame, come what may. Henry Laster is forever known as the "Awful Waffle Kid" as he almost got the awful waffle that day.

This episode is completely different than the 1990 pilot. In the 1990 pilot Donkeylips is the bully while Budnick is his henchmen. When Nickelodeon decided to pick up the series Steve Slavkin made several rewrites. When filming for "Michael Comes to Camp" Danny Cooksey (Budnick) had hit a growth spurt and Slavkin was impressed with Cooksey's charisma so Budnick was changed to the camp bully and schemer. Donkeylips also changes as the series progressed. In the first few episodes he's a bully and henchmen of Budnick. His character later became a more comedic dimwitted and friendly character that he became well known for. Also Ug's character is totally different from the 1990 pilot. In the 1990 pilot Ug is a strict disciplinarian and very monotone and boring. When the series was picked up, Slavkin changed the Ug character to more of a buffoon who was clueless and often on the receiving end of a prank or physical slapstick. Kirk Baily (Ug) says the 1990 pilot version of Ug was too boring and says fans of the series would not like the 1990 pilot at all.

Kirk Baily (Ug) actually got feathers stuck in his throat during the scene where he fell victim to the trap in the girls bunk. The feathers were stuck in his throat for close to two hours and he had to have the Heimlich maneuver performed on him.

Michael Bower (Donkeylips) actually chipped a tooth when he ate his "macaroni".

First of three appearances of Kent Flankman (Henry W. Laster).

Before the series officially premiered in the summer of 1991, Nickelodeon filmed a promo with Venus DeMilo (Telly) and Heidi Lucas (Dina) in character to promote the show.

This episode was filmed in late 1990 and early 1991.

The only episode in which extra beds are in the boys bunk. By the next episode the extra beds are gone.

Only time in the series where someone goes out the back door in the boys bunk. The back door was then turned into a bathroom for the remainder of the series.

Originally aired on another Nickelodeon television show, Special Delivery.
