***SPOILERS*** Inaugral episode of the hard hitting series "East Side/West Side" that shocked it's unsuspecting audience who were used to seeing mostly sanitized stories about life in the inner city as well as how those living in these urban hellholes survive without ending up behind bars committed or dead. Social worker Neil Block, George C. Scott,is trying to help single mother Layna Harris, Carol Rossen, from having her child taken away by the city in that she's accused of being an unfit mother. The fact that the man who knocked her up deserted her and his child and checked out to parts unknown is no excuse for Layna to, in supporting herself and her child, go out on the street and turn tricks when she can get on public assistance- welfare-instead.

Too proud to beg for help and at the same time harassed by her neighbors, in being a part time hooker, it's now up to social worker Brock to help her out in proving despite her way of paying the bills that she has more right for her child then her heel of a "husband" who deserted both her and his biological flesh & blood baby hen they needed him most. it's argued by the family court that the fleeing from his responsibilities infants father's mother Mrs Pallegrino, Augusta Ciolli, who lives in the same apartment building with Layna, is the legal person to be given custody of the child.

****SPOILERS**** It's when the abuse and harassment get completely out of hand when one of her neighbors Charlie Mooney, Clifford A. Pellow, practically kidnapped Lanya's child right out of it's crib that his wife Emily, Elizabeth Lawrence, lent her that Layna flipped out and went full blast, wearing a blond wig, out on the streets to offer herself up to every low life creep like the drunk and barley on his feet Freddie Wilcox, Alan Alda, in the neighborhood! It's now became apparent that Layna is unfit and unable to have her child and in the end it's forcibly taken from her by Paul Bauersmith an employee for city's social services. Brock who did everything to help out Layna is now left feeling that he let her down in not doing enough for her! But at the same time knows that no matter how much he did, in the pressures that poor Layna was subjected to, it was a losing effort right from the start anyway.
