The "Tales from the Cosmos" comics are a reference to "Tales from the Crypt", a cult classic horror comic series which began its publication in 1950 and met its demise after the imposition of the Comics Code Authority in 1954.
This entire episode is a tribute to "Aliens", even down to Mikey saying "Game over man! Game over!"
