Galvatron plans to summon Megatron to assist him, but it's not clear which Megatron he wants: the Transformers (1984) Megatron or the Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) Megatron. Given the appearance of Optimus Primal from Beast Wars, it's likely he wanted the latter version.

This is the second full-length animated "Transformers" film to release in the franchise's entire history.

Optimus Primal, the Maximal leader from the American Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) series, makes a cameo appearance in this Japanese special.

The film contains allusions to Les Transformers: Le film (1986):

  • the arrival of an apocalyptic god-like robot in the middle of a war
  • the villains side with the above-mentioned robot at first, but get decimated
  • the appearance and co-existence of two Primes, or Convoys as they are called in Japan (Optimus and Rodimus Prime, Optimus Primal and Lio Convoy)
  • the use of the Matrix by a Convoy to defeat the robot.

Not since 1986 had the Transformers hit the movie screens. But after 12 years, they're back! And it's about time! The movie is composed of three segments, two of which are recycled from the Canadian CG Beast Wars program. The highlight is the original 45 minute cel-animated segment called "Beast Wars Second:Lio Convoy Kiki Ippatsu". It's good to see hand drawn Transformers again, and the animation is light years above that of the Beast Wars Second TV series. The plot is fairly similar to the previous TF movie (Giant Monster Transformer can only be stopped by the Matrix), but it's still a lot of fun to watch! TRANSFORM!!
