Galvatron plans to summon Megatron to assist him, but it's not clear which Megatron he wants: the Transformers (1984) Megatron or the Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) Megatron. Given the appearance of Optimus Primal from Beast Wars, it's likely he wanted the latter version.
This is the second full-length animated "Transformers" film to release in the franchise's entire history.
Optimus Primal, the Maximal leader from the American Beast Wars: Transformers (1996) series, makes a cameo appearance in this Japanese special.
The film contains allusions to Les Transformers: Le film (1986):
- the arrival of an apocalyptic god-like robot in the middle of a war
- the villains side with the above-mentioned robot at first, but get decimated
- the appearance and co-existence of two Primes, or Convoys as they are called in Japan (Optimus and Rodimus Prime, Optimus Primal and Lio Convoy)
- the use of the Matrix by a Convoy to defeat the robot.
