Most of the film was shot in February 2008 when Ryan McGinley and Jack Pierson visited their friend and fellow artist and photographer David Armstrong at his rustic retreat in Bovina, New York. The three of them interviewed and photographed each other for a story in Fanzine 137 magazine. David Armstrong, one of the three actors-directors, passed away on October 26, 2014, exactly one year before the first release of the present film, a tribute to his memory.
