This film begins with a young man named "Hoang An" (Phan Tuan Tu) who lives in the small village of Que Vo in North Vietnam. Being patriotic he decides to enlist in the army so that he can fight in the war to unify Vietnam. Needless to say, his departure causes some emotional pain between him and his girlfriend "Diu" (Luu Ha) which they try to partially remedy by writing letters to one another. In that regard, even though Hoang An is going off to fight the enemy, the fact of the matter is that there is no real sanctuary for anybody in the country as American bombers continually rain death and destruction on a regular basis. And it is partially because of this that Hoang An joins the special forces. Unfortunately, rather than getting the chance to fight, Hoang An is ordered to serve as a mail courier instead which generates a great deal of disappointment for him. But as he carries out his orders he begins to learn from a veteran soldier named "Tan" (Quoc Tuan) the value of his mission which he had not initially recognized. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a pretty good film about the Vietnam War which captured the North Vietnamese perspective rather well. To that end, it portrays the pain and passion experienced by them along with the determination to end the war and bring peace to their land once and for all. That being said, however, it also includes a certain degree of bias which is probably to be expected from a film of this type. Be that as it may, while it wasn't without its faults, it was still an entertaining film for the most part and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.
