Director Patrick Lussier worked on the original Scream (1996) as an editor.

The episode was originally going to be named after Vimm (2004), but was changed to be named after When a Stranger Calls (1979).

The movie listed on the movie theater marquee is When a Stranger Calls (1979) - the same film this episode is named after.

After this finale premiered, it was announced that there would be a Halloween special to tie up any loose ends.

Season finale

First time in 'Scream' film and television franchise history where the killer doesn't die at the end; instead, he/she goes to prison.

The end confrontation between Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) and Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) almost mirrors the end of the original Scream (1996). Both Kieran and Eli (Sean Grandillo) plead with Emma not to shoot them, trying to frame one another as the killer, just as Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) had done in the original Scream (1996). Also, Kieran told Emma it was okay and took the gun from her right before shooting Eli, just as Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) had done in 'Scream', shooting Randy. Finally, Kieran's motive was identical to Billy's, as was his psychotic nature.

Body Count (2): Deputy Stevens (Hunter Burke) and Eli Hudson (Sean Grandillo).

Also contains spoilers for Scream 2 (1997): Eli's death in this episode is somewhat parallel to Derek's (Jerry O'Connell) in Scream 2 (1997). In that movie, the real killer (Mickey (Timothy Olyphant)) tried to convince Sidney (Neve Campbell) that Derek was the killer; the same happened in this episode with Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) (the killer) trying to convince Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) that Eli (Sean Grandillo) committed the murders. In 'Scream 2', Mickey then shot Derek to death and taunted Sidney for not believing Derek was innocent; the same happened in this episode with Kieran shooting Eli and taunting Emma for doubting him.

Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) is revealed to be the killer.

Took after the original movie to get the unexpected killer.
