Several footages of the film were lost during the Chennai floods in late 2015. Although, the final cut version of the film was available.

When the interval fight sequence was being filmed, a few of the actors sustained minor injuries since they were so focused on making it realistic.

This is the first time a heat treatment furnace was used in a Tamil feature film.

Ironically, the Dhaba owner, Kumar never drinks any alcohol in the movie. He only drinks milk.

I wondered why there hasn't been a review yet for this brilliant movie. I was waiting to catch this flick and got a chance yesterday. I have to say it was worth the wait.

On seeing Quentin Tarantino's movies, I wondered why there aren't such a kickass story telling in making, in an industry like Thamizh Cinema, which produces most number of movies each year. The answer is Uriyadi.

Be it the casting, the BGM, the sub-plots, everything supported the script perfectly. The cinematography and editing made the screenplay even more intense and pacy.

The interval block and the climax were the most smartly shot scenes that I have witnessed in recent times.

Kudos to the whole cast and crew of the movie! Especially Vijay. This movie will gain cult status for sure.

My Rating - 10/10 purely for its brilliance.

Its definitely not a film for faint hearts but recommended for film enthusiasts.

A brutally honest and realistic film which depicts caste based politics in a thriller genre.

A bold attempt by the film maker Vijay kumar who directed, produced, acted and scored background music in this film.

you will not feel its a film by debutante as the film grips you till the end.

the cast include freshers except mime gopi whose an upcoming character artist.

mime gopi played his role aptly has a cunning caste party leader

The screenplay which is extremely focused on the narration takes you into the film and keeps you guessing till the end.

The director has got the best out of everyone.

This film is a masterpiece which deserves a place in the history of Tamil cinema.

Uriyadi is Very Appreciable movie.

Director and Actor VijayKumar and friends in movie have delivered a commendable job.

Complete movie is mix of thriller, action, entertainment.

Screenplay also have supported the story line well.

There are many issues happening in real world similar to Story of the Uriyadi as unnoticeable.

Uriyadi movie provided a small light on how common people affected due to racism and Politics.

Overall Uriyadi movie should be in the low budgeted big hit list.

A splendid Crime Thriller. Vijayakumar delivered his best with his debut movie. He handled all the departments with ease.. He was good in his acting, screenplay, execution and even casting.

Set in the late 90s, the story revolves around 3 set of characters where they come across. Results in a nail biting thriller which will keep you on the edge of the seats till the end of the movie. The first 10-15 minutes were cleverly used by the director to register the characters then takes you a roller coaster ride. Excellent Background Music by Masala Coffee Band (Sooraj Santhosh - you delivered the best.. Proud of you man)... added the spices in this delicious Thalappakkattu Biriyani. :P. Camera was top notch.. The color tone was too realistic.. I think that might be the main reason, that it gave a feel of the realistic incidents..

This is one of a gem.. Friends.. Go for it.. for its freshness, and raw feel..

9.4 on 10

Worth - Watching... so sad that i didn't get the chance to watch in cinemas coz.. the movie releases over here are limited...

This film has Strong content, Brilliant screenplay, Realistic film making, Mass moments and yet deals with very sensitive issue of India - Casteism. Amazed by the fact that the Director has put tremendous hard work and done the Background score, 1 version of editing, Writing, Producing and acting and excelled in all. Such passion and effort brings respect on South Indian film industry.

There are some films which are extremely relatable that anyone might have experienced or seen in real life. This film is damn one of them. The characters portrayed as four college students can be witnessed by anybody in their college life. The connection of Caste-politics pinned with the college backdrop is inevitably true and perfectly elevated. The movement of each scene are just like connecting the dots for the perfect situations which will get out of hands. On the course of the film, one might wonder whether it is a Docu-fiction, an Independent film or a Mainstream film. But the director clarifies with the songs and a surprising climax presentation that this movie is not alienating the live in audiences.

Postives:

* Screenplay and the length for the movie is biggest plus which is razor sharp and to the point.

* Story backdrop is apt to the core.

* Each character looks real and candid except the wannabe politician played by Mime Gopi looks little cinematic but accountable.

* Cinematography, Background score and the fight sequences are well poised and evenly matched.

Neutrals:

* College students killing the people so easily without any guilty is questionable.

On the whole, Uriyadi is the real honest good film by a debutante Vijay Kumar and will foresee a great future ahead.

I recommend this movie to anybody who is above 18 and is definitely not for the lighthearted ones. Thanks!!!

As a regular movie goer, I've come to look at Tamil movies as a source of entertainment and minimal intellectual resource. I was literally shocked to the core when I watched Uriyadi for the first time, after I noticed some glowing reviews on it. It literally rewrote my understanding of Tamil cinema.

I've seen many people compare Vijay Kumar's style to Tarantino's and I might quite agree. Add to it the authenticity and rootedness that seem to dominate and seep through the screen! Where was this master creator all along?

Violence? There's plenty of it. It's violence galore! Does it offend you? Don't let it! It's just a reflection of reality, which can be harsh when directly dealt with and portrayed on screen.

Alcoholism? Smoking? It's nothing that's not representative of the "liberated" student community of India, specifically Tamil Nadu. Vijay Kumar is not preaching. He is just showing the norm in colleges and what's the probable outcome meted out to such students.

What makes a man sell his property to indulge in his passion? What makes him gamble on the goodness of people by bringing to light the ugliness of caste based politics? Take a bow, Vijay Kumar!

A bold film that's not lacking in violence, politics or friendship. It's everything a youngster needs to watch and learn from! A masterpiece in 90 minutes!

It has been well over a year since I first watched Uriyadi. I have been meaning to write a review but kept putting it off because I wanted to do it justice. I have watched it many times since but the feeling of awe never diminishes.

While caste politics was the intriguing factor that led me to watch the movie, what completely took me by surprise was the world-class style of filmmaking. The deftness and maturity displayed in the handling of caste discrimination and divisive politics are commendable. The realistic approach and originality are a breath of fresh air. The film itself takes off with a jolting swiftness that refuses to slow down. The romance portion, though short, gives all the warm fuzzies. The college and hostel scenes are nostalgia inducing.

Every scene is bold and wrought with intensity. The intermission Dhaba scene is beautifully chaotic and credible. I personally love the brilliantly scripted and executed lodge sequence and hostel sequence near the climax, which are bordering on mad genius. To write an almost 20-minute length segment, with no dialogues at all, and to pull it off the way he did, the filmmaker deserves to be lauded. It's amazing that a movie on politics and caste could be made, without mentioning or antagonizing any particular group.

The background music deserves a special mention. It further elevates the goose bump-inducing scenes that have been written to perfection. Kudos to debutant filmmaker Vijay Kumar, who is also, surprisingly, the writer, producer, lead actor AND background music arranger of the movie. Tamil cinema only stands to gain with refreshing ingenious filmmakers like him and I look forward to his next!

After a long time, I felt the completeness a great film after watching Uriyadi. This is supposed to be a thriller, but the movie keeps entertaining you even in second, third time watching it. Knowing that it is his first as a director, actor, produce. I got to say, Vijay nailed it. I just instantly became his fan, and look forward to his next movie. I also have to appreciate the editor for his brilliant cuts, and the camera for the intriguing shots/angles.

The entire cast, though very new to cinema, have done a great job in living in the characters given to them. The heroin portion is so small, but so important to the movie, boy - she isn't pretty but stays in your mind for some odd reasons.

Double thumps up!! Tamil/Indian Cinema needs more of Vijay and his story telling.

First, a big congrats to Vijaykumar for choosing this movie as his launch pad.

The freshness of storytelling about a very sensitive plot using the backdrop of college life is a brilliant attempt. This movie keeps you engrossed to the screen and you never know when the 90 minutes is over. It keeps lingering in your mind for a long time after watching it. Every character has been chosen perfectly and blended with crisp screenplay, top class cinematography and added with a sizzling background score this film is a class of its own.

Thanks to Vijaykumar. Though this film might not be a commercial success due to the release in lesser number of screens and lesser promotional activities, Vijaykumar - your next film will definitely will have high expectations.

This is one movie tamil cinema can be proud of for years to come.

I rather not compare Uriyadi to the western cult movies but it seems there is no better way of expressing the pure joy of watching this movie. Good movies like this show bravery of the cast and their willingness to go to any extent to get their message across. Just like classics such as Anbe Sivam that made Thamizh people all over the world proud of their industry, Uriyadi joins that mile high club. This movie has a lasting effect on you. I thought movies such as this without songs and marketing would be avoided by general audience, but I was wrong to some extent...most of the youth have watched this movie and connect with the pain and effort the makers have gone through. Its sad to see the interviews with Uriyadi makers who seem to lost all hope. But don't worry, the people stand behind you and please don't give up. Do continue to make good movies. We don't want a talent such as yours lost. You could try crowd funding your next project like they did for Lucia(Kannada) to ease the stress on the financial part and I guarantee you that we would do all that we can to support you.

Yes!!! from the first frame to last frame very gripping narration. Original story with natural acting. Lenin vijay (actor/director/producer) is set an inspiration to anyone who wants to make a independent film. He proved that to tell a good story one don't need star cast or fancy locations or item songs or branded music etc etc... awesome background score... I gave only seven points out of ten, coz climax is bit speedy for me, and missing feel in second half. CAUTION: Regular formula movie lovers please stay away from URIYADi, coz it definitely blow you and you may change your taste of watching movies.

A group of college kids get tangled in a war between 2 factions belonging to different castes. The leader of one of the factions tries to leverage their involvement to instigate the public and use it as a platform to enter into politics, going to ugly lengths to meet the same. Blind to this fact of being taken advantage of and with their lives and future at stake, how the students deal with the problem forms the plot of Uriyadi.

Whats Good?

1. The movie is equally raw in it presentation of the story as it is professional, a balance that even the most experienced of directors struggled to bring. 2. Almost all the actors seem apt for the roles and have played their part aptly. 3. Sequences that show the daily life of college students is accurate and entertaining 4. The movie's ending which is a bit hard to believe, surprisingly does not make the viewer feel the same 5. The ending is well orchestrated and has Tarantino feel to it

Whats Bad?

1. The romantic sequence in the movie seems to have no head or toe as it serves no relevance to plot. 2. Ending is a bit had to believe, but one does get a consolation as the director has built the plot so well that any other ending would have left the viewer very unfulfilled 3. Could have been better if there were 2 strong leaders for the caste factions as that would have made it feel even more realistic

Vijay Kumar, has done an exceptional job for a first time director and actor. He has definitely made me look forward to his future projects eagerly. The movie has successfully managed to capture and present the murky world of caste politics that plagues the sub urban Indian society. With a plot that is both controversial and brutal, Vijay has created a cult movie.

Movie : Uriyadi

Rating : 4/5

Having heard a lot about this film, I decided to watch it. After watching URIYADI, I felt it's nothing short of a good film by a powerful filmmaker. Vijay Kumar has his command on the story and screenplay well. There's no doubt that he acts well too. A political action thriller, URIYADI is an attempt to change audience's view towards the genre.

URIYADI is not for those who like completely mass oriented films or for those who don't usually like political films. Even I don't like political films much. Here, URIYADI is an exception.

Backed by Vijay Kumar and team, URIYADI runs well with pace and thrill in the first half. Being only 90 minutes long in duration, the film doesn't have any usual dull moments. The interval blockade is the most terrific part that I found apart from the climax.

The story and screenplay run parallel to brilliance, if not excellence. The editing is fine. Dialogues are well delivered and the camera work too is fine. The message conveyed by Vijay is well understood. The music by Masala Coffee is good and is placed accordingly.

As mentioned before, the first half is easily understood and runs at a good pace with interesting scenes. But it's in the second half that the film begins to slow down until the final showdown. There are no dull moments, but the scenes after the second half begins aren't too compelling or interesting. But the film regains its pace in its last 20 minutes, leading to a terrific ending that you won't soon forget after watching the film.

Overall, URIYADI is a well crafted action thriller film that though has some flaws, yet manages to entertain without much of delay. It's not about who watches it (The director mentioned his film is not for the faint- hearted due to violence), but it's about how, from what viewpoint one watches it.

The soundtrack of this movie is excellent - Maane maane, kantha, akkini kunju. The thriller keeps you hooked till the end. You sort of guess what will happen at some scenes - for e.g. when the mother of one of the members is introduced you know something bad is going to happen for that person. But at the same time there were a lot of scenes where you couldn't guess what will happen next.

The biggest plus of the movie is the climax, you come out of the movie fully charged up, positive - I wouldn't say that it makes you feel 'happy'. Its more like listening to a good electrifying political lecture (the likes of Seeman). The only thought that ran through my mind midway while watching the movie was 'how will this have a happy ending?', but whoa, what a climax!

Having said that, had the climax been any different (like the ones in Bala movies) this movie wouldn't have got the critical acclaim that it has received now. For e.g. the movie Kirumi was technically much stronger - in aspects such as story telling, acting and in camera craft. But it made the hero 'a kirumi' (which was the whole point of the movie BTW) and that is where Uriyadi wins.
