Mano is a silent but expressive hand puppet. He stars in short skits, each set in front of a deep blue backdrop, in which he has little adventures set to music and silly sound effects. His performances are simple but very diverse: he plays with toys, discovers instruments and machines, and even performs magic tricks. Sometimes, Mano is joined by other hand puppets or tiny finger puppets with googly eyes.

Rather than fill his usual role as a bit character in separate segments, Mano appears as part of the main cast in "Open House in Sesamstraat".
The series started as a collection of short musical films created for "Sesamstraat".
The title "Lejo" does not refer to the main character but to his performer, Leo Petersen, whose nickname is Lejo. The puppet character's name is actually Mano, the Spanish word for "hand".
The episodes always take place in front of a completely blue backdrop. This backdrop was originally a blue cloth, but since 2014, the blue backgrounds have been created with a green screen effect.
Mano is the only character who is a full hand puppet. The other characters are all identical finger puppets, each played by one finger outfitted with googly eyes and a nose.
In the 2014 shorts, there is a recurring character called the Pianist. He is a tiny finger puppet who never cooperates with Mano and shares a rivalry with him.
