A mysterious man steals David's taxi (and his breakfast), but he does not get very far. Bernie recognizes the car and refuses to give him some petrol. The taxi robber is soon apprehended. He has obviously been in a fight because his face is bruised, and he claims he cannot remember who he is. While Nurse Cassidy takes care of his injuries, PC Mason is called out to assist Sergeant Miller. A dead woman has been found at the foot of a rock, and Miller agrees with PC Mason that the two cases are connected. Alf Ventress and Oscar Blaketon are planning a camping trip to France to see all the places they passed through during the war - on push bikes! They get a few tips from James Moncrieff, a fellow war veteran who is on holiday in Aidensfield.

This was the last ever episode of Heartbeat. Because the decision to cancel the programme was made after this season of episodes had been written and filmed, there is no conclusion to the various ongoing storylines such as the growing friendship between PC Joe Mason and Carol Cassidy.
During a scene when PC Joe Mason is standing beside his motorbike talking to Oscar Blaketon outside the Aidensfield Arms, a man dressed in a hooded coat and carrying a large scythe is seen to walk past the Aidensfield Garage in the background. After the episode was broadcast, some people on discussion forums suggested that the scene had been altered to include the Grim Reaper when it became known that no further episodes would be made, though in fact the decision to end the series was taken long after filming had finished.
In subsequent repeats on ITV3 the Grim Reaper has been deleted.
In this one, and several previously there is a classic blooper. David's lorry approaches in the opening sequence and it's number plate is inverted.
This episode ended with a cliffhanger. During a fight with a suspect, Oscar Blaketon was seriously injured when he fell onto an agricultural implement which pierced his lung. The final scene in the pub in which the regulars raised a glass to him in tribute suggested that his chances of surviving were not good. Because this last-ever episode was written and filmed before the decision was taken to cancel the series, his fate will forever remain unknown. It is possible that the hooded figure carrying a scythe who walked across the background of an earlier shot (see another trivia entry) implies that the Grim Reaper has come to take Oscar away with him. Derek Fowlds has stated that if the show had not been cancelled, Oscar would have survived.
