This made for TV special is a documentary which was made to celebrate the first 1000 episodes of the Australian television series Number 96 (1972).

This 90 minute TV Special is available on the 2006 2-disc Australian DVD release of Number 96 (1972).

This program was first broadcast in Australia on the 26th June 1976. According to a title card added for the DVD release, the show was repeated on Australian television on 17 January 1977. The repeat included an additional segment which updated details of the Number 96 (1972) series since the premiere screening six months earlier. The title card states: "Here now is that additional segment which covered the show's final summer cliffhangers." The 2006 Australian DVD release of this title includes both the additional segment and the original ending from the first broadcast.

The television series Number 96 (1972) had won nine Australian Television Logie Awards when this TV special about the show first went to air in mid 1976.

The 2006 Australian DVD release of this show includes a 2006 introduction by 1970s Australian sex-symbol and one of the show's many stars, Abigail.

Number 96 (1972) ran for 1218 episodes which meant that only about 218 episodes of the series were made and broadcast after this TV special first debuted.

This shows closing credits roll boasted that it was "Produced in Color at the studios of Channel 10, Sydney in association with the 0-10 Network".

A follow-up documentary to this program, "Number 96: The Final Years", was made for DVD in 2006 and released in that year on the Australian DVD for Number 96 (1974).

In the final credits, the word THOUSAND was formed in pink by highlighting one letter of this word from a list of eight of the cast's names from Number 96 (1972) who had appeared especially on this program which was made to celebrate the first 1000 episodes of this series.
