You wake to find yourself in a small, square, glass room containing a futuristic-looking tube-like bed, a toilet, and a table with a radio playing a tune on it alongside a mug and a clipboard with data on it. A timer is counting down from a minute just above the closed door leading out of the small room. A voice sounds from a speaker in the ceiling of the room. After some things are said, the voice becomes distorted for a second, sparks come out of the speaker, and the voice returns to normal. It counts down from five, synchronized with the timer above the door. At zero, the door opens, and you are released from your cell....

GLaDOS may be named for the real life Dr. Gladys J. Loring who was one of the psychiatrists who evaluated Mercury Astronaut candidates at Wright-Patterson. These men were put through extreme tests that pushed the boundaries of ethical testing.
The development team was quite small and because of this the team utilized assets from the Half-Life universe. To avoid confusion the team decided to integrate the story of Portal into the Half-Life story.
GLADoS' voice has the same tonality as the voice of the computer system in the science fiction cult film Το Δέκατο Τρίτο Πάτωμα (1999), a film about alternate realities.
In the game files there is an unused Red Portal and a texture file for a second Portal Gun but what function these would have had is unknown.
Two plus two really is ten in the base four counting system. Unlike the normal decimal (i.e. "base ten") counting system with ten digits (0 through 9), base four only has four (0 through 3). The numbers thus go in order: 0,1,2,3,10,11,12,13,20,21, etc. Therefore 2+1=3, but 2+2=10 and 2+3=11.
Ranked #3 for Top 100 Video Games of All Time by IGN
The game takes place in 2010.
The games sequel, Portal 2, is one of the world's you can visit in the PS4 game, Lego Dimensions. Most of the cast for the Portal 2 game recorded dialogue for their characters Lego counterparts.
