A young girl called Narda is granted a magical stone by an angel and transforms into the superheroine, Darna. In the Philippines, Darna encounters a satanic plot orchestrated by philanthropist, Domino Lipolico. To carry out his threat, Lipolico creates two disciples, the snake goddess, Valentina and the savage batwoman, Impakta.

Tonton Gutierrez who played George returned to the franchise to play the villain Nosferamus in Darna (2005)
Francine Prieto who played Young Narda returned to the franchise to play the villain Babaeng Tuod (aka the Wood Witch) in Darna (2009)
In the comics, Narda has only one younger brother, Ding. In this movie, Narda has two brothers, Dong and Ding. Dong (the middle sibling) was created specifically for the movie.
For the first time, Darna's trademark red helmet is not included in the costume design. The helmet was also absent in the follow up movie Darna! Ang pagbabalik (1994)
Two of the three villains originated from the comics, Valentina and Impakta.

The trailer features clips from scenes that were not in the finished film. They include a school bus hijacking and a scene with Ding and other school children menaced by snakes.
Darna is a creation of Filipino Komiks artist/writer, Mars Ravelo. Ravelo also created Captain Barbel which also had a movie Captain Barbell (1986). Edu Manzano stars in both movies.
